Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit says Turkey has not decided whether to send a small military unit to Afghanistan to train the Northern Alliance forces opposing the ruling Taleban.
A Turkish television station (NTV) reported Turkey was planning to provide such a training force at Washington's request. The United States has not acknowledged making such a request.
Weeks ago, Turkey announced its support of the U-S led campaign against terrorism and said it was willing to train the Northern Alliance. Ankara also has offered to host a meeting of Afghan opposition groups to help foster the formation of a new coalition government once the Taleban is removed. The meeting had been planned for this week, but was postponed after the Taleban executed opposition leader Abdul Haq.
