Turkeys Says Unite Afghan Opposition Rather than Sending US Troops - 2001-09-21

Turkey says uniting and supporting Afghan opposition groups, instead of sending in foreign troops, would be a better way to combat terrorists sheltered by the ruling Taleban in Afghanistan.

Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit Friday said Turkey would provide military training and intelligence support for the opposition groups, but not troops.

He said Turkey is already conducting intelligence work throughout Afghanistan.

Speaking to C-N-N Turk television, Mr. Ecevit also said the United States should help strengthen the opposition groups rather than send ground troops into Afghanistan. He warned that deployment of outside troops to Afghanistan has been unsuccessful in the past.
