White House Says Taleban Must Surrender Bin Laden - 2001-09-30

White House spokesman Andrew Card says there will be no negotiations.

/// CARD ACT ///

We have told the Taleban government what they should be doing. They have got to turn not only Osama bin Laden over, but all of the operatives of the al-Qaida organization.

/// END ACT ///

Mr. Card says if the Taleban continues to harbor terrorists, it should be removed from power. But he told the "Fox News Sunday" television program, America is interested in fighting terrorism, not nation-building.

Meanwhile, on N-B-C's "Meet the Press" Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld greeted the latest Taleban statements with skepticism.

/// RUMSFELD ACT ///

I have no reason to believe anything a Taleban representative would say.

/// END ACT ///

Secretary Rumsfeld said if the Taleban refuse to turn over Osama bin Laden, the Afghan regime will pay the price. (signed)
