EU Supports Multiethnic Post-Taleban Government - 2001-10-31

A top European Union official has expressed the group's support for a multiethnic government in post-Taleban Afghanistan.

Belgian Foreign Minister Louis Michel, whose country currently holds the rotating E-U presidency, made his comments in the Uzbek capital, Tashkent, after talks with Uzbekistan's President Islam Karimov.

Foreign Minister Michel said Uzbek leaders and the European Union agreed that Afghanistan's government should include representatives of all ethnic groups in the country, once the Taleban rulers are deposed.

The Taleban is made up largely of ethnic Pashtuns. Afghanistan also includes Uzbek, Tajik, and other minority communities.
