Taleban Say American In Custody Has Died - 2001-11-04

The Taleban says an American arrested 10 days ago in Afghanistan has died of an illness.

Taleban officials say the man died today (Sunday) in the southern city of Kandahar. They say the man was arrested in the town of Spin Boldack near the Pakistani border on suspicion of spying.

The Associated Press quotes a Taleban official as saying the man's name was John Bolton, from the U-S state of California and that he entered Afghanistan as a relief worker.

A-P quotes a U-S State Department spokeswoman as saying U-S officials had never confirmed the Taleban had an American in custody.
