U-N Airlifts Food for Remote Afghan Areas - 2001-11-07

The United Nations World Food Program says it has deployed two aircraft to airlift more than two thousand tons of food from southwestern Pakistan to Turkmenistan to feed desperately hungry people in Afghanistan.

From Turkmenistan, the food will be sent on trucks to the remote areas of Afghanistan.

One of the aircraft left the southwestern Pakistani city of Quetta on Wednesday with 45 tons of wheat on board. The second aircraft is scheduled to start deliveries on Thursday.

U-N officials say northern Afghanistan is the hunger belt of the country, where the World Food Program is seeking to help about three million people stay alive until next year's harvest.

The United States has said it will provide two million dollars to the U-N agency to cover the cost of the operation.
