Afghan Opposition Asked to Respect Human Rights - 2001-11-11

The U-N High Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson is calling on opposition forces in Afghanistan to respect human rights of civilians in the recently captured city of Mazar-e-Sharif.

In a statement issued in New Delhi Sunday, Mrs. Robinson says it is time to end the climate of impunity that has accompanied previous changes of power in the city and surrounding areas.

Mazar-e-Sharif was under Taleban control until Friday's capture. Pockets of resistance to the Northern Alliance opposition remain in and around the city.
