Chinese and Pakistani Presidents Talked on Afghanistan by Phone - 2001-11-17

Chinese President Jiang Zemin and Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf called on the United Nations Friday to ensure a stable transition between the Taleban and the new government in Afghanistan.

The two leaders, speaking by telephone, agreed that a diverse transitional government must be in place to ensure no dangerous power vacuum occurs in the long-troubled and unstable country.

Mr. Jiang and General Musharraf also expressed concern over the humanitarian crisis created by air raids and ground combat in their neighbor nation.
