Hamid Karzai Praised Iran's Support in Ousting the Taleban - 2001-12-08

Afghanistan's new interim leader, Hamid Karzai, has praised Iran's support in ousting the Taleban.

Mr. Karzai also expressed hope that Iran will cooperate in establishing peace and progress in the post-Taleban Afghanistan.

The new Afghan leader's comments were broadcast today (Saturday) on Iranian state radio.

For years, Shiite Muslim Iran backed Afghanistan's Northern Alliance - composed mainly of Hazara, Uzbek and Tajik populations - in the group's struggle against the Sunni Muslim Taleban.

Hamid Karzai was chosen as interim leader of Afghanistan, Wednesday, at a Bonn meeting of Afghan tribal leaders and factions.

Iran said Wednesday that it had no objection to Mr. Hamid, a member of the Pushtun ethnic group, heading the interim government.
