Afghan Quake Leaves at Least 27 Dead - 2002-04-12

An earthquake in northern Afghanistan has killed at least 27 people and injured about 100 others.

Aid workers say dozens of homes and buildings collapsed in the Nahrin district after a series of tremors hit the area Friday morning. Officials in the region say most of the damage was centered in the village of Doabi, 140-kilometers northeast of Kabul.

Pakistani seismologists say the quake measured 5.6 on the Richter scale and its epicenter was in the Hindu Kush mountain range, an earthquake-prone area. The quake and several aftershocks were felt as far away as Kabul and northwestern Pakistan.

Last month, an earthquake in Afghanistan's Nahrin region left between 800 and 1,000 people dead, with nearly 1,500 others homeless.
