Russian Border Guards Seized Drugs on the Tajik-Afghan Border. - 2002-05-31

Russian border guards have seized more than 11 kilograms of drugs hidden by smugglers on the Tajik-Afghan border.

A spokesman for the border guard service says most of the drugs were in the form of heroin, although two kilograms consisted of hashish.

Earlier this week, border guards shot dead four suspected heroin smugglers trying to cross from Afghanistan into Tajikistan.

Russia has about 25-thousand troops in Tajikistan to help the former Soviet republic patrol its border with Afghanistan. Tajikistan has become a key crossing point for illegal drugs heading to Western markets.
