Gen Franks: Central Asia Much Safer - 2002-08-26

U-S Central Command chief General Tommy Franks says Central Asia has become a much safer place, but he added there is much more to be done.

General Franks made the comment today (Monday) after a meeting with Tajik President Emomali Rakhmonov in the capital, Dushanbe. His visit to Tajikistan is part of a Central Asian tour which has included stops in Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan.

In spite of improved security the region, General Franks says small groups of terrorists are still active in Central Asia and Afghanistan. He says the terrorists could regroup if given the chance.
