Afghan Demonstrators Declare Support for Karzai - 2002-09-10

Hundreds of Afghans have staged a rally in Kandahar to condemn last week's attempted assassination of President Hamid Karzai.

At least 15-hundred people rallied Tuesday at the residence of Kandahar state governor Gul Agha, shouting their support for Mr. Karzai and Mr. Agha.

They also denounced the former Taleban regime and Osama bin Laden for defaming Islam.

The march was held at the scene of last Thursday's assassination attempt in the former Taleban stronghold city. A gunman fired on President Karzai and was shot dead by the American security detail protecting the president. Officials believe the attempt was planned by Taleban supporters.

The demonstration came one day before the anniversary of the September 11th attacks on the United States, which have been blamed on Osama bin Laden and his al-Qaida terrorist group.
