Afghan Foreign Minister:Afghanistan Evolved from a Terrorist Haven to One that Contributes to Peace - 2002-10-18

Afghanistan's Foreign Minister says his country has evolved from being a terrorist haven and threat to peace to one that contributes to security and stability in the region.

Speaking to an an audience in Washington Thursday, Foreign Minister Abdullah acknowledged the challenges Afghanistan faces, but said he is optimistic about the future of his nation.

Speaking to the Council on Foreign Relations, a non-governmental foreign policy research organization, Mr. Abdullah recounted the progress achieved in Afghanistan over the past year.

The Afghan foreign minister said Afghanistan's recent achievements include the rebuilding taking place in Kabul, the increase in trade throughout the country, and the return of one-point-six million refugees to Afghanistan.

Mr. Abdullah did warn, however, that his county still lacks a security infrastructure, including a national police force, and remains the world's top producer of opium.
